Why a zebra?

Medical students are taught: "When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras" — meaning don't jump to rare diagnoses. But EDS patients are the zebras. The zebra has become a beloved symbol of the EDS community, representing those whose conditions are too often overlooked. We see you — and we know how to help.

Understanding EDS & Hypermobility

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) are connective tissue conditions that affect how your joints, skin, and organs function. If you're hypermobile, your joints move beyond the typical range — which might sound like a good thing, but often leads to chronic pain, joint instability, fatigue, and a long list of seemingly unrelated symptoms.

Many patients with EDS spend years being told nothing is wrong, or receiving treatments that actually make things worse. Traditional PT — with aggressive stretching, heavy loading, and a "push through it" mentality — can be harmful for hypermobile bodies.

Our approach is different

Healthwell has been treating patients with EDS and hypermobility for over 29 years. We understand that your body doesn't follow the typical playbook — and we don't try to force it to.

Our treatment focuses on:

Conditions we treat

What to expect at your first visit

Your initial evaluation is a 45-minute, one-on-one session with your physical therapist. We'll talk about your history, your symptoms, your goals, and what hasn't worked before. We'll do a thorough physical assessment — always at your pace, always with your permission.

You won't be rushed, you won't be dismissed, and you won't be given a generic exercise sheet. We'll build a treatment plan that actually respects how your body works.

No prescription needed

Under California's direct access law, you can start physical therapy without a doctor's referral. Just call or email to schedule your evaluation.

“I had trouble walking prior to working with them, and now I can hike, bike, surf, and swim. If you have HSD, it's really beneficial to work with a physical therapist who understands it.”
— Ginny T., Healthwell patient
